Thailand Exhumes Israelis From Unlicensed Cemetery Near Bangkok
Thai authorities exhumed three Israelis and a British citizen from an unlicensed Jewish cemetery in Chachoengsao Province, relocating them to Chonburi as an official investigation opens into unauthorized burials.
Thai authorities exhumed the remains of three Israeli citizens and a British woman from a Jewish cemetery in Chachoengsao Province, east of Bangkok, following the expiration of the site's operating license. The bodies were relocated to an authorized cemetery in the neighboring Chonburi Province.
According to the Thai Ministry of Interior's Provincial Administration Department, the license for the Jewish Cemetery Thailand was not renewed after inspections revealed the site failed to meet regulatory requirements, largely due to its proximity to a public water canal. The operation followed an order issued on September 7 by the governor of Chachoengsao Province, mandating the dismantling of site structures and the transfer of the remains.
Investigation and Relocation
Out of the four graves inspected at the site, records showed that only one individual—an Israeli citizen who died in November 2023—was buried while the cemetery's license was still valid. The other three decedents, including two Israelis who passed away in November 2025 and April of this year, and a British woman who died in July, were interred after the license had lapsed.
During the exhumation process, authorities noted discrepancies in the burial layout. In one instance, remains were discovered approximately five meters away from the originally marked plot after initial excavations at the designated marker yielded nothing. The Thai Interior Ministry emphasized that the identities of the deceased were confirmed using headstones, death certificates, and passports rather than forensic DNA testing.

Official Inquiry
In response to the incident, the Thai Ministry of Interior has established a special committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial issuance of the license and the subsequent refusal to renew it. The probe will also examine how unauthorized burials were permitted to take place and whether required municipal permits were submitted at the time of interment.
Simultaneously, the Thai Deputy Minister of Interior has ordered a comprehensive review of all cemetery and crematorium licenses nationwide. Authorities stated that enforcement actions will be taken against any uncovered violations, regardless of the operators' religious or cultural affiliations.
