Alex Saab, a Colombian-Venezuelan businessman considered a key financial operative and close confidant of Nicolás Maduro, has reached a plea deal with United States authorities and agreed to cooperate with ongoing federal investigations. According to the Associated Press, the agreement was finalized following legal proceedings in a Miami federal court.
Guilty Plea and Financial Forfeiture
During a hearing at the federal court in Miami, Saab pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering as part of a sweeping corruption scheme linked to government contracts in Venezuela. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Saab has committed to forfeiting approximately $195 million identified as proceeds from illicit activities and to providing sensitive information to American investigators.

Evasion of US Sanctions
According to the prosecution, Saab operated a sophisticated network of front companies and inflated government transactions to secure lucrative contracts for importing food and medicine into Venezuela. Portions of these funds were diverted from the CLAP subsidized food program, which was originally intended to supply basic goods to impoverished families, and channeled through US bank accounts.
Investigators maintain that Saab paid substantial bribes to Venezuelan officials in exchange for securing these contracts. Among other admissions, he acknowledged transferring $17 million to José Vielma Mora, a former governor and senior government official. Over the years, Saab was also involved in Venezuela's oil and gold transactions, assisting the Maduro regime in its efforts to circumvent international sanctions.
