Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa criticized Israeli security policies at the Atlantic Council in New York, stating that peace talks had previously reached 90% agreement.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa sharply criticized Israel's security policy during an Atlantic Council event in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, claiming that Jerusalem attempts to achieve security by creating problems in neighboring states.
"I believe the problem is with Israel, not Syria," al-Sharaa said, adding that the events of October 7 should not dictate Israeli policy toward Damascus. He urged Israel to respect the security of others if it wishes to safeguard its own borders, noting that Syrian presidential palaces and airports have been targeted in airstrikes.
Al-Sharaa revealed that indirect talks between Israel and Syria had previously reached a 90% agreement before negotiations stalled due to additional Israeli demands. Damascus continues to seek a security arrangement before discussing any comprehensive peace, maintaining its firm stance regarding the Golan Heights.
The diplomatic engagement follows months of heightened tensions and US-mediated contacts, aimed at stabilizing the border region and preventing further military escalation.
