The German federal government is preparing an unprecedented step to restrict access to classified military documents, including the Oplan contingency blueprint for a potential Russian attack, following significant electoral gains by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Saxony-Anhalt.
According to a report by The New York Times citing 17 current and former officials, security chiefs in Berlin harbor deep concerns that far-right politicians could leak sensitive defense plans and intelligence directly to Moscow, given the party's declared pro-Russian stances.
"We will not share military intelligence with a government led by forces with explicit ties to the Putin regime," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated.
Intelligence Compartmentalization and NATO Pressure
The proposed restrictions involve targeted compartmentalization rather than a complete cutoff. Berlin plans to limit access to information regarding Russian subversion and espionage while continuing to share counterterrorism intelligence. Furthermore, federal officials are considering altering working mechanisms with regional states to prevent potential paralysis of federal security operations.
Germany is also facing intense pressure from NATO allies, including Poland and Scandinavian countries, who have expressed anxiety over sharing intelligence with Berlin if there is any risk of leakage to Russia. Similar concerns previously surfaced during the 2017 intelligence boycott against Austria when the far-right entered its interior ministry.
AfD Denies Allegations
In response, AfD party spokesman Jörg Hermann rejected the accusations entirely, describing the potential withholding of intelligence based on unproven allegations as an undemocratic measure that cannot be justified to voters.
