Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Filed Against Beilinson Over Patient Death
A medical malpractice lawsuit has been filed against Clalit over the tragic death of 21-year-old Anis Al-Krinawi at Beilinson Hospital, following a fatal air embolism caused by an unsealed central catheter.
A medical malpractice lawsuit has been filed against the Clalit Health Services in the Central District Court in Lod, following a fatal incident at Beilinson Hospital. The case centers on the tragic death of 21-year-old Anis Al-Krinawi from Rahat, who passed away on September 10, 2025, after air accidentally entered his bloodstream through an open central venous catheter.
The Fatal Error and Hospital Admission
Al-Krinawi had been hospitalized in Beilinson's Internal Medicine Department IV under suspicion of lung rejection, roughly a year after undergoing a successful double-lung transplant at the same facility. According to the lawsuit, filed by attorneys Shay Poyring and Tanya Yarovitsky, an attending nurse mistakenly attempted to administer an Acamol medication through a dialysis-only central line on August 13, 2025.
The nurse allegedly failed to use a standard intravenous line and left the catheter open after the attempt. This caused a lethal air embolism, leading to acute respiratory distress, emergency resuscitation efforts, severe brain damage, and ultimately his death a month later.
Hospital Officials Acknowledge the Failure
Following the incident, senior hospital officials met with the victim's father, Hassan Al-Krinawi, to discuss the tragedy.
"It is clear that there was a sudden deterioration right around the time the line was opened, which is why we are retraining staff and there is no argument about this," hospital officials admitted to the father during the recorded conversation.
A senior physician added, "We do not know for certain what happened, but we do know he had a central line called a dialysis line that was open and should not have been open, and it is possible that some air entered."
Expert Medical Opinion
Prof. Meir Barzis, an internal medicine expert and former director of the Clinical Safety Center at Hadassah, provided the expert medical opinion supporting the lawsuit.
"This was an unfortunate and preventable event in which a central catheter was left open, causing a fatal air embolism and death," Prof. Barzis stated, explaining that negative pressure can draw air into the vascular system if a central line remains unsealed.
He also heavily criticized the nursing staff's documentation, noting that the nurse's daily log was vague, incomplete, and omitted the fact that the catheter was left open, which delayed critical medical diagnosis and response.
Beilinson Hospital responded briefly to the allegations, stating that the facility has received the statement of claim and will respond to it through official legal channels.
