An investigation into a lethal shooting attack at the Yehuda Junction reveals that two soldiers faced weapon malfunctions because safety devices were left in the chambers during the engagement with terrorists.

According to the findings, one of the fallen soldiers managed to clear the malfunction, remove the safety device, and fire three bullets at the terrorists before being hit. The device, known as a 'mek-pork', is a safety tool inserted into the chamber to visually indicate that no round is present, designed to prevent accidental discharges but required to be removed before operating the weapon.

Following the findings, military directives for forces operating in the area have been updated. Under the new protocol, safety devices must be removed during operational activities to ensure a swift response in the event of an encounter.

The investigation also indicates that the attack was directed by Hamas operatives based in Turkey. Previous assessments examined the connection between the terrorists and the organization's infrastructure in the country, and the new findings further reinforce this external direction.

The attack occurred on Friday morning, October 23, at the Yehuda Junction near Hebron. Two armed terrorists opened fire at a force from the Aryeh Battalion of the Search and Rescue Brigade, which had established a checkpoint in the area. Staff Sergeant Ron Yonatan Roitman, 23, from Ashkelon, and Sergeant Yuval Shay Soylem, 20, from Hod Hasharon, were killed in action. Three other soldiers were wounded, and both terrorists were eliminated.

Initial investigations showed the terrorists were en route to execute a larger attack against civilians, but the presence of the military checkpoint disrupted their plans. Hamas operatives in Turkey have directed numerous terror cells in Judea and Samaria in recent years, funding and orchestrating attacks that security forces have continuously worked to thwart.
