Indian Steel Slag Highway Enters Guinness World Records
A 1.85-kilometer four-lane highway in Raigarh, India, built entirely from processed steel slag by Jindal Steel, has entered the Guinness World Records, saving costs and protecting the environment.

An extraordinary infrastructure project in the city of Raigarh, located in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, has received official recognition from the Guinness World Records. A four-lane highway measuring 1.85 kilometers in length has been certified as the world's longest road built exclusively from processed steel slag.
According to a report in the Indian newspaper Dainik Jagran, the project was developed by Jindal Steel in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute. The project demonstrates an innovative approach relying on industrial byproducts instead of natural stone across all structural layers, the official report noted.
Cost Savings and Green Construction
Approximately 200,000 tons of processed steel slag were used to construct the roadway, enabling a complete replacement of natural materials in its various layers. The process of turning waste into advanced infrastructure material involved extracting trapped metal, crushing, screening, and rigorous grading before placement in the field.
The material underwent strict physical, mechanical, and environmental testing before being approved for use, passing all of them with complete success, project team representatives stated.
The new road was specifically engineered to withstand exceptionally heavy truck traffic.
Experts point to the economic advantages of the intriguing venture. The road structure is approximately 35 percent thinner compared to a conventional road, with up to 40 percent savings in construction costs, engineers evaluating the data estimated.
Valuable Resources for Nation-Building
According to a report by the Indian news website Umcom News, Jindal Steel Chairman Naveen Jindal addressed the engineering achievement. India's growth must be driven by innovation that creates economic value while protecting the environment, Jindal emphasized.
The achievement shows how science, technology, and industry can transform industrial byproducts into valuable resources for nation-building, the company chairman proudly added.
Indian Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh also praised the groundbreaking initiative. The road in Raigarh reflects the nation's ability to translate scientific innovation into practical infrastructure solutions, Minister Singh noted with satisfaction.
