Asian Elephants Reveal Exceptional Self-Control in New Cognitive Study
A new scientific study reveals that Asian elephants possess impressive self-control and inhibitory restraint, successfully passing complex detour cognitive tests.

A new study published in the scientific journal PLOS One reveals an impressive level of self-control and restraint among Asian elephants. A team of researchers led by psychologists Sian Hughes and Joshua Plotnik from the City University of New York, in collaboration with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand, tested 16 elephants aged 4 to 60 with a cognitive challenge that sometimes trips up even humans.
The Transparent Box Experiment
The experiment focused on a trait called "inhibitory control"—the ability to suppress an automatic impulse in order to execute a smarter action that yields a better outcome. To test this, researchers used the "detour test." Initially, the elephants were trained to eat fruit from an opaque black box with a dedicated side opening for their trunks. Once they mastered this, the black box was replaced with a completely transparent one.
The elephants could clearly see and smell the fruit through tiny holes in the front of the box, but there was no way to extract it directly. To obtain the food, the elephant had to ignore what it saw straight ahead, walk around the box, and insert its trunk through the side opening. Despite the immense temptation and having no prior experience with transparent materials, the cameras revealed that the elephants did not get confused. Instead of ramming the transparent barrier, they walked straight around to the opening without any delay.
Age and Cognitive Flexibility
To test how flexible their self-control was, the researchers made the task harder by rotating the box so the opening was no longer in its familiar location. This change caused some confusion, requiring more time for the elephants to locate the new opening, but they ultimately solved the problem and reached the fruit.
At this stage, an intriguing age-related finding emerged: older elephants in the group had more difficulty adapting to the changed direction of the opening compared to younger elephants. The researchers noted this may hint at a decline in cognitive flexibility and brain function with age, though further research is required to confirm this.
Brain Size and Social Life
Impulse control is considered a key measure of animal intelligence and is often linked to creatures with complex social structures and large brains. Elephants maintain deep, long-term relationships, and recent studies have shown they are sophisticated enough to use unique calls resembling "names" to address one another.
"The findings prove conclusively that Asian elephants possess an exceptional ability to pause an immediate instinct, recalculate their path, and alter their behavior to overcome obstacles."
The researchers emphasize that while the findings do not fully map the boundaries of elephant intelligence, they clearly demonstrate advanced cognitive capabilities in these magnificent animals.
