Iranian Cyber Groups Resume Sophisticated Attacks Against Israeli Targets
ESET reports a resurgence of Iranian cyberattacks targeting Israeli sectors, driven by groups like MuddyWater utilizing advanced artificial intelligence tools.

Amid escalating regional tensions between Israel and Iran, cybersecurity firm ESET has reported a significant resurgence of Iranian-linked cyberattacks targeting various Israeli sectors. Following a period of relative quiet attributed to internet access restrictions imposed by the regime in Tehran, threat groups have renewed their operations with advanced technological capabilities.
Resurgence of Notorious Cyber Groups
According to ESET researchers, telemetry data covering the period from April to September 2026 indicates a systematic and consistent upward trend in cyber activity across the Middle East, with Israel serving as the primary focus. Prominent threat actors resuming operations include MuddyWater and FilthyFeline, a sub-group associated with the OilRig cyberespionage apparatus. The temporary lull in attacks was reportedly caused by domestic internet restrictions in Iran, which have since been lifted, enabling the groups to resume efficient operations.
AI Integration and Technological Upgrades
Alongside the increase in attack volume, researchers documented a major technological upgrade in the attackers' arsenal. The groups have integrated advanced artificial intelligence tools to automate attacks, shorten infiltration times, and refine operations. These findings highlight a concerted effort to develop dedicated offensive tools rather than merely recycling legacy malware.
Meir Friedman, CEO of Comsecur, ESET's representative in Israel, emphasized that the return of these groups serves as a stark reminder that cyber threats continue to evolve during apparent lulls. Friedman noted that organizations cannot rely on periods of relative calm and must implement advanced defense solutions, continuous monitoring, and real-time detection capabilities.
Broader Strategic Confrontation
These cyberattacks coincide with heightened military and diplomatic tensions. Defense establishment assessments indicate that Israel and Iran are approaching a critical juncture. Security commentators note that ongoing negotiations are running parallel to intensified military preparations and aggressive rhetoric, serving as leverage as both sides weigh the prospect of an agreement or further escalation.
