Smotrich Challenges Opposition to Publish Legal Platforms After Video Backlash
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich challenged Gadi Eisenkot and Benny Gantz to publish their own judicial platforms following fierce backlash over a controversial AI-generated reform campaign video.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich responded on Tuesday to attacks by Gadi Eisenkot and Benny Gantz following the unveiling of the Religious Zionism party's new judicial reform plan. Smotrich called on his political opponents to publish their own legal platforms for the public to judge.
The Judicial Reform Controversy
The political clash erupted after Religious Zionism presented a comprehensive plan for sweeping changes to the judicial system, accompanied by an AI-generated campaign video. The controversial footage depicted Supreme Court President Isaac Herzog, Supreme Court Justice Daphne Barak-Erez, and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara as protesters being dragged across the ground under the campaign slogan "Breaking the Blockade."
Eisenkot strongly condemned the campaign material, stating: "I strongly condemn the despicable and violent video uploaded by draft-dodging enabler and draft-refusal supporter Bezalel Smotrich, who pretends to represent the sons and daughters of Religious Zionism but in practice tarnishes an entire sector."
Gantz issued a concise message to Smotrich and Rothman, stating: "Bezalel, Simcha, you have learned nothing." Meanwhile, Democrats party leader Yair Golan joined the attack, labeling the video "dangerous incitement and permission for bloodshed."
"Publish your detailed platform for reforming Israeli democracy, not just slogans, and let the public decide," Smotrich stated in response to his critics.
Smotrich's Challenge and Background
Behind the video controversy lies a broader legislative program presented by Smotrich and MK Simcha Rothman ahead of the upcoming elections. The platform includes an override clause, the division of the Attorney General's powers, changes to judicial appointments, and continued curbs on legal authorities.
Proponents argue these steps restore balance between branches of government, while critics view them as a direct continuation of the 2023 judicial overhaul that sparked deep public division prior to October 7.
