Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv overnight between Monday and Tuesday, according to reports from Reuters citing Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Local officials in Kyiv reported that two residential buildings were damaged during the airstrike. A Reuters eyewitness reported hearing a loud explosion in the capital, while the Kyiv Military Administration confirmed that air defense systems were activated and urged residents to remain in shelters. No casualties have been reported so far.
This attack follows the expiration of a 72-hour truce on strikes targeting the capitals of both nations. The escalation comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts by the United States to bring an end to the war. Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, visited Moscow and Kyiv in an attempt to restart negotiations.
The Kremlin stated on Monday that it does not rule out resuming trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, but clarified that it is still too early to discuss a specific date or location.
The overnight strike follows a significant escalation in Russian attacks on Kyiv. On Friday, a Russian drone struck the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the heart of the capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated at the time that the drone directly targeted the office of the SBU chief, leaving at least seven people injured.
Prior to that, Kyiv faced consecutive days of Russian bombardments. On Thursday, a high-rise residential building was severely damaged, injuring ten people, including a child and six medical personnel. On Wednesday, strikes hit residential areas and a university in the city center, injuring 11 people.
