An 18-story building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, leaving fears that numerous people are trapped beneath the rubble. Videos circulating online captured the building in the densely populated Eastleigh neighborhood collapsing within seconds as a massive dust cloud engulfed the street. Police reported that one woman has been rescued and the voice of another trapped person has been heard.
Rescue Efforts and Official Responses
The collapse occurred around midday during peak hours in the bustling commercial district of the capital. Rescue teams faced severe difficulties reaching the site due to surrounding high-rise structures and crowds of onlookers, prompting police to disperse them with tear gas. Local media also reported instances of looting shortly after the disaster occurred.
The contractors and engineers are supposed to ensure the work is carried out by professionals. Most of them do not do that. That is why we see these disasters. There is no accountability, said Bibia Mahmoud, president of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya.
Systematic Building Safety Issues
Nairobi has experienced rapid urbanization, with high-rises springing up across the city. However, corruption and lax enforcement often allow contractors to bypass regulations and use substandard materials. A national construction authority report revealed that 87 percent of buildings inspected nationwide last year failed to meet standards or lacked required permits.
