Direct Route Across the Alps
European rail operators continue to expand their transcontinental networks, unveiling a new direct high-speed connection between Italy and Germany. Starting in the summer of 2027, a daily direct train service will link Rome and Munich without requiring any transfers, offering a seamless overland alternative to flights between the two major European hubs.
The service will be operated by the Italian Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed train, with a travel time of 8.5 hours in each direction. Currently, daytime travelers between these destinations must transfer at least once, typically at transit hubs such as Bolzano, Verona, or Innsbruck in Austria.
Certification Delays
The launch of the project was initially scheduled for December 2026 but has been postponed due to lengthy regulatory approval processes. Nine dedicated trainsets are currently undergoing technical testing and certification with German and Austrian authorities to ensure seamless transitions between the different electrification and signaling systems along the route.

From there, the train will cross the Alps, stopping in Innsbruck before reaching its final destination in Munich. This layout is designed to serve both long-distance travelers and regional tourists.
Technical Specifications and Border Controls
The electric train features eight carriages and four service classes at various price points, with an operational speed of up to 300 km/h. Alongside the route from the Italian capital, a parallel daily direct service is planned to connect Milan and Munich under the same daytime schedule.
Official ticket prices have not yet been released, but industry estimates suggest starting fares of several dozen euros for early bookings. While passengers will travel within the Schengen Area, authorities may conduct random passport checks on board during the journey.
