How to Properly Reheat Rice and Pasta in the Microwave Without Drying Them Out
Learn the simple food hack to evenly reheat pasta and rice in the microwave without burning the edges or leaving the center cold using a ring shape technique.
It happens almost every time. You put a pile of pasta or rice in the center of the plate and heat it for a minute and a half. The edges are already smoking, and the center is still frozen. You add another minute, and the edges dry out completely.
The reason is simple. Microwave waves penetrate food only a few centimeters deep. In a thick pile, the heat has to crawl slowly from the sides to the center, and by the time it gets there, the sides are already boiling.
Here is how to arrange the plate:
-
Spread the food in a ring shape around the plate, leaving the center empty.
-
Keep a thin and even layer, without any mounds.
-
Cover with a microwave-safe lid to keep the steam inside.
-
Heat in a few short intervals and stir in the middle.
When there is no thick center, no area is left behind. The dish heats up faster and more evenly, and the edges do not have time to dry out.
Two more common mistakes:
Heating at full power from the first moment heats the outside too quickly. Large portions heat up better at medium power, even if it takes a little longer. Also, rice or pasta that goes into the microwave dry comes out even drier. A spoonful of water over the dish before heating makes a big difference.
