Manchester City Found Guilty of Multiple Premier League Financial Violations
Manchester City has been found guilty by an independent commission of severe financial violations spanning nine seasons, inflating revenues by over 900 million pounds.
The Premier League announced on Tuesday that an independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of numerous charges involving severe violations of the league's financial regulations across nine seasons.
Financial Violations and Charges
According to the Premier League statement, the commission determined that between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons, Manchester City orchestrated fictitious contracts with multiple commercial partners and relied on similar agreements with external entities. This maneuver was designed to artificially inflate the club's revenues and reduce its expenses by over 900 million pounds, circumventing financial rules.
Furthermore, the commission found City guilty of submitting inaccurate financial reports, concealing its true financial standing from auditors, and breaching Premier League and UEFA expenditure caps. City was also found guilty on three out of four charges relating to non-cooperation with the investigation.
"This is the most significant disciplinary case and decision in the history of the Premier League," said Premier League CEO Richard Masters.
Upcoming Penalties and Club Response
Penalties have not yet been determined and will be decided in a subsequent phase of the process. Potential sanctions range from reprimands and fines to points deductions and potential expulsion from the league.
Manchester City responded sharply, stating they are disappointed and surprised by the decision, and intend to appeal vigorously against what they described as clear and material errors in law and fact.
