Yoav Ziv Steps Down as Maccabi Tel Aviv Manager After Nine Years
Yoav Ziv leaves his role as Maccabi Tel Aviv team manager after nine years. Former reserve colonel Raz Ben-Shamesh is expected to replace him.
Yoav Ziv has stepped down as the senior team manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv after nine consecutive years in the role. Ziv, 45, who was appointed in the summer of 2017 to succeed Benny Tabak, may remain with the club in a different capacity. Raz Ben-Shamesh, a former Air Force officer and reserve colonel, is expected to take over as the new team manager.
Ziv's departure follows a turbulent start to the season during which he was suspended for the opening weeks. The punishment stemmed from the riot that erupted at the end of the State Cup final against Hapoel Beersheba last May, which also resulted in disciplinary actions against players from both clubs.
Ziv is widely regarded as one of the most prominent and respected figures in Israeli football. As a player, he wore the yellow jersey of Maccabi Tel Aviv from 2010 to 2016. He concluded his playing career with Hapoel Petah Tikva before immediately transitioning into management at Kiryat Shalom.
Throughout his career, Ziv made 32 appearances for the senior Israel national team and played for several major clubs locally and in Europe, including Maccabi Haifa, Hapoel Haifa, Hapoel Nof HaGalil, Beitar Jerusalem, and Belgian side Lokeren.
