Loaded Gun Found in Jerusalem Synagogue Frequented by Prisons Chief
A loaded gun was found in a Jerusalem synagogue frequented by Prisons Service Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi, who faces high-level threats, prompting a police investigation.
A loaded handgun was discovered hidden inside a synagogue in the Har Homa neighborhood of Jerusalem, frequented by Israel Prisons Service Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi, who faces the highest level of security threats. Following the discovery, the investigation was handed over to the Central Unit (YAMAR) of the Jerusalem District Police, which is examining whether a connection exists between the concealed weapon and the threats against the commissioner's life, and whether he was the intended target.
Last month, reports indicated that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara is expected to file an indictment against Yaakobi in connection with the case involving associates of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. According to reports, Yaakobi faces prosecution for witness intimidation and obstruction of justice regarding former police spokesperson Lior Abudraham. Six months prior, reports emerged regarding an intended indictment against Yaakobi for breach of trust and obstruction of investigative proceedings.
According to the suspicions, Yaakobi allegedly leaked information regarding a covert investigation to former Judea and Samaria District Central Unit commander Avishai Mualem. The underlying investigation concerned allegations that Yaakobi acted to prevent the arrest of Jewish terrorism suspects in the West Bank in exchange for a police promotion. Yaakobi was appointed military secretary to the National Security Minister in February 2023, promoted to rank of commander three months later, and named acting prisons commissioner in December 2023.
