When most of us download fast food chain apps, our primary goal is usually simple: to get better deals. Why not get cheaper fries or a free drink? While it is clear to any sensible consumer that signing up for a loyalty club involves some data tracking, few realize how much this information is used to algorithmically predict their next purchase with precision. An article recently published in the technology magazine "Wired" reveals an alarming glimpse into the invasive mechanism of the fast food giant.
Commercial tracking under the auspices of a loyalty club
A California resident and magazine reporter, who enjoys the legal right to demand access to the data companies store about him, decided to request this information from McDonald's. His goal was to better understand what one of the world's largest fast food companies collects about its loyal customers. A few days after he submitted the request, a surprise landed in his inbox: a huge 515-page file.
The report, parts of which were analyzed using artificial intelligence, revealed a disturbing reality. "The real secret of McDonald's is actually commercial tracking," noted Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, in an interview with "Wired". Privacy experts explain that this level of detail may feel invasive, but it is a legal and standard practice for how giant corporations in the United States manage their loyalty clubs.
Lorrie Cranor, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, noted that this is a "wake-up call," but emphasized that the data is presented in a format not understandable to the average person, requiring greater transparency from corporations.
The algorithm knows everything
What did that report contain? It turned out that every time the customer opened the app, a detailed record was created regarding when, where, and what he purchased. The record was so thorough that it included every barcode scan and even the prizes he won. But the truly worrying thing was how the data was used by the company's predictive algorithms.
McDonald's system predicted how often the customer would visit branches in the next six weeks (2.16 times), how much he would spend on average per order ($13.49), and what his total expenditure would be. In addition, the system identified his preferred item for repeat purchase, a large Diet Coke, and classified his buying habits under specific behavioral categories such as "food-based lunch snack" or "grab-and-go lunch".
Ironically, the report gave the customer a zero score on the "churn" index, meaning the algorithm saw him as a lifelong captive customer who would never stop purchasing the chain's products.
Exposing the power gap between corporation and consumer
In response to the findings, a McDonald's spokesperson told "Wired" that "McDonald's takes privacy and data security seriously, and we take significant steps to protect customer information." According to the chain, the information is used to provide a more personal customer experience, and customers always have choices regarding their privacy.
However, experts point to a huge power gap. Ryan Calo, a professor at the University of Washington, emphasized that the consumer is completely inside the company's ecosystem. Behind the scenes, experts work to design the system to maximize profits, turning seemingly innocent loyalty programs into a long-term tracking tool.
Professor Ari Ezra Waldman from the University of California, Irvine, added that the daily aggregation of data and its processing by artificial intelligence create a highly invasive and personal picture of the consumer's daily routine.
Ultimately, after being stunned by the report's scope, the reporter chose to exercise his right and demand that the chain completely delete all the data it had ever collected about him. He decided to cut contact for one simple, principled goal: to prove that the algorithm that predicted he would never leave was simply wrong.
