A massive cloud infrastructure outage at Google affecting its London region paralyzed essential services across the United Kingdom and Europe on Tuesday, causing severe disruptions, damages, and panic among millions.

The collapse at the tech giant's data center led to banking application crashes, blocked account access, and declined credit card payments across retail stores, toll booths, and e-commerce websites.

The most severe blow was registered by the fintech banking platform Revolut, where millions of customers were left unable to withdraw cash from ATMs, execute wire transfers, or pay with credit cards. Alongside this, disruptions and difficulties were reported in the applications and services of major financial institutions including Lloyds Bank, HSBC Holdings, and Halifax, as well as the Emma financial management app.

The damage and disruptions rapidly spread beyond the financial sector: delivery firm DPD was unable to dispatch packages, bicycle-rental services and ticketing websites were knocked offline, and supermarket shoppers were left unable to check out at cash registers.

Google confirmed that a widespread issue is impacting dozens of services within its London data center, stating that its engineering teams are investigating the root cause to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. The incident underscores the severe operational risk of relying heavily on a limited number of cloud providers, where a single failure can paralyze entire sectors and severely impact daily routines and economic activity.
