Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana stated during an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" that he is considering a presidential run in 2028. Responding to moderator Kristen Welker, Kennedy answered affirmatively when asked about his potential candidacy.

Senate Plans and 2028 Outlook

"My plans right now are to run for re-election, but as I've said before, if I don't feel like I can be more effective in the Senate, I'll consider it," Kennedy said. While numerous politicians from both political parties have acknowledged exploring potential 2028 bids, no official declarations have been made yet.

"If a bunch of clowns run, and I think they're clowns and one of them might win, and I think I can do a better job, I'll consider running," Kennedy remarked.

Potential Republican Field

Vice President JD Vance is widely viewed as a leading prospective candidate for the Republican nomination in 2028. However, Kennedy declined to draw comparisons when asked about Vance, stating he is not yet at that stage of deliberation. President Donald Trump has previously pointed to Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential political heirs. Meanwhile, the upcoming 2028 presidential election will mark the first time since 2012 that Trump will not be on the Republican ticket.
