Colombia is facing a worrying security escalation, prompting international authorities to issue strict travel warnings. The United States embassy in Colombia recently issued a severe travel advisory due to a sharp increase in attacks by armed criminal and terrorist groups. The targeted warning concerns the Norte de Santander department in the northeastern part of the country, bordering Venezuela, particularly the Catatumbo region. US authorities are urging citizens to completely avoid traveling to this area and to maintain a distance of at least five miles from the border.

Advanced Tactics and Drone Threats

What particularly concerns security officials is the shift by armed groups, including the ELN terrorist organization, toward advanced and accessible tactics. According to the US embassy, these groups use commercial drones purchased in retail stores, mount explosive devices on them, and combine this with small-arms fire to attack police stations and military installations. Officials warn that these attacks can occur with almost no prior warning, while residents and visitors in the area are also exposed to the dangers of extortion, kidnapping, and displacement due to struggles for control over illegal drug routes.

Global Travel Advisories and Local Violence

While the US State Department ranks Colombia as a whole at Level 3, advising citizens to reconsider travel, the northern border region is designated under Level 4, meaning do not travel. Meanwhile, Israel's National Security Council maintains an active Level 2 travel warning for Colombia, defined as a potential threat risk, and recommends taking heightened precautions. The NSC points to a rise in hostility and antisemitism globally, noting Colombia as a notable country where this phenomenon has manifested, including verbal harassment, threats, and vandalism.

Security authorities strongly recommend avoiding approaching government buildings and military facilities, staying constantly updated through local media, and maintaining a low profile during any travel in the country.

Security concerns are not limited to border areas. Last week, a fatal shooting occurred in the rural area of La Boquilla, near the popular tourist city of Cartagena. Four young people were shot dead, and three bodies were found inside a vehicle. The Colombian monitoring organization Indepaz defined the incident as the 95th massacre in the country for 2026, prompting a police investigation into threatening pamphlets linked to the Clan del Golfo criminal gang.
