The mayor of Izmir, Cemil Tugay, is expected to join Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the coming days, in a historic move that could shake up the country's political landscape. The development follows a meeting held last week in Ankara between Tugay and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Political Realignment in Izmir

According to a report by the newspaper Turkey Today, an official in the Izmir municipality confirmed that the transition is all but finalized, with an official announcement expected later this week. Tugay resigned last June from the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), strongly criticizing a wave of expulsions within the party and what he termed an unacceptable erosion of democratic will.

"There is no official confirmation yet, but it is very likely that he will announce crossing the floor this week," a municipal source stated.

A Historic Shift for the Secular Stronghold

Tugay's meeting with President Erdogan in Ankara on September 30, officially designated to discuss future projects in Izmir, evidently paved the way for the definitive move. Joining the ruling party marks a historic milestone: it will be the first time the AKP has ever controlled Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city, known for its distinctly secular character.

For the past two decades, Izmir has served as a primary focal point for protests against Erdogan's governments. Its potential shift to the ruling party, even through political defection rather than the ballot box, represents a severe blow to the opposition and a massive symbolic victory for the Turkish president.
