Hungary Moves to Repeal Same-Sex Adoption Ban
Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced plans to repeal legislation that effectively banned adoption by same-sex couples. The law, originally enacted by the previous administration in 2020, required individual adoption requests to be approved directly by the Minister for Family Affairs, leading to a de facto blanket ban.
Speaking to reporters, Magyar emphasized that decisions regarding child adoption should rely on professional assessment rather than political intervention. "It should not be the minister, a politician, who makes the decision in such cases, but professionals who are able to determine the conditions under which a child can achieve a happy and harmonious life," Magyar stated.
Reversing Policies and Aligning with EU Law
The policy shift comes months after Magyar defeated long-serving leader Viktor Orban in the April elections, ending 16 years of rule by the right-wing Fidesz party. Under Orban, Hungary implemented various restrictive measures against the LGBTQ+ community, which the European Court of Justice ruled in April violated European law by stigmatizing individuals based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
"We can state unequivocally that we will change this system," Prime Minister Peter Magyar declared during a press briefing.
