Gedera Parents Raise Security Concerns as Official Sparks Row Over Kippah Remarks
Parents of a special education kindergarten in Gedera raise alarm over security breaches, leading to a sharp clash with a local education official who dismissed their concerns.
Security Concerns at Special Education Kindergarten
Parents of children attending a special education communication kindergarten in Gedera are expressing severe concerns over security protocols. They report that since the beginning of the school year, the facility has lacked a consistent security guard. Furthermore, they allege that Arab maintenance and cleaning staff enter the premises without proper supervision or the required escorts.
Given the high sensitivity of the kindergarten, which serves children with special needs requiring constant supervision and a highly protected environment, parents argue that any breach in entry protocols poses a direct risk.
Confrontation with Education Department Head
An inquiry by one of the mothers to the head of the municipality's education department escalated into a sharp confrontation. In an audio recording of the conversation, the senior official is heard dismissing the security complaints and accusing the mother of racism.
To justify the employment of the workers, the official made controversial remarks regarding religious Jews:
"Even among kosher Jews, there are thieves and rapists, and some of them wear kippahs."
Parents expressed outrage at the official's response, stating that the administration is hiding behind political correctness instead of addressing practical security questions, such as whether a guard is stationed at the gate and what the escort procedures are for external workers.
Municipality and Ministry of Education Response
The Gedera Local Council responded by stating that security at educational institutions is determined in accordance with the standards and directives of the Ministry of Education and security officials. According to the council, the Ministry of Education withdrew the full-time security standard for this kindergarten for the current school year, aligning it with all other local kindergartens that do not have continuous security.
However, the council approved an interim solution, funding a security guard for two hours in the morning and two hours during pickup times.
The council defended the cleaning staff, stating they are legally employed through an authorized contractor and undergo all required background checks. The municipality emphasized that an employee's language, religion, or nationality does not indicate danger and cannot be a ground for denying employment.
Regarding the recorded conversation, the council stated that the head of the education department did not call the mothers "racist" but clarified that demanding the exclusion of Arab workers based solely on their origin is a discriminatory demand that cannot be accepted.
