Eilat Driver Arrested for 217 km/h Speeding and Suspected Drug Use
Eilat police arrested a driver caught speeding at 217 km/h on Route 90 under suspected drug influence, leading to a swift indictment and detention request.
Eilat police arrested a 25-year-old local resident overnight who was caught driving at 217 km/h on Route 90, more than double the legal speed limit. Authorities suspect he was driving under the influence of drugs, and a fast-track indictment was filed against him today along with a request for detention until the end of proceedings.
Traffic police conducting enforcement on Route 90 spotted the vehicle heading south at extreme speed. The section where the car was caught has a limit of 90 km/h, but the measurement device clocked 217 km/h. After statutory deductions, the speed was recorded at 212 km/h.
Following the arrest, the driver was taken for questioning in the Eilat area. Investigators discovered that in addition to the excessive speed, he was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs. Consequently, the local traffic prosecution unit quickly filed an indictment charging him with excessive speeding, driving under the influence of drugs, and reckless driving.
Alongside the criminal proceedings, the driver's vehicle was towed and impounded for a month, and his driving license was administratively suspended for the same period.
Police Inspector and Attorney Gur Tzur, the traffic prosecutor in the case, explained the request to extend the driver's detention, stating that the circumstances of the offense justify keeping him in custody to prevent the danger he poses. He noted that the driver chose to endanger road users by combining extreme speeding with the consumption of dangerous drugs.
