Egypt is advancing the construction of a subterranean complex excavated into a mountainside near the Cairo-Suez road, according to satellite imagery analysis. Geo-analyst Ben Zion Macles published a comparative study of the site, estimating that most excavation and building works are nearly complete.

The facility is located roughly 70 kilometers east of Cairo, situated west of the Suez Canal outside the Sinai Peninsula. Published documentation reveals multiple excavation points along the mountain slope, a covered entrance structure, and newly paved access roads leading directly to the openings.

Monitoring of the site has been ongoing for over a year. In August 2025, Macles reported new excavation work that reportedly began in June of that year, suggesting potential military utility due to the site's proximity to a fenced military base and a Russian-supplied radar system.

By May, updates highlighted newly asphalted access roads leading directly to the tunnel portals, a feature described as unusual compared to other tunneled facilities examined in the region and Sinai. Macles noted a possible geographic link to a nearby Rezonans-NE radar system, though no direct operational connection has been confirmed.

Recent imagery from late 2025 indicates that one primary entrance has been completed alongside two additional entrances under active excavation, while work on a fourth portal was halted due to engineering constraints. While initial assessments suggested the complex might serve as an expanded emergency storage facility, its exact purpose, internal capacity, and intended contents remain unverified.
