A 38-year-old mother of three, Nania Kalav (formerly Malada), was fatally stabbed this week at her apartment in Beersheba, allegedly by her husband. Her eldest daughter, Banchi, shared harrowing details with Ynet about years of domestic abuse, noting that police had been called to the home multiple times in the past.

Years of Silence and Abuse

According to Banchi, her mother chose not to file official complaints against her husband to protect the family. "Mom wanted a good and happy life, which is why she didn't complain about my father," Banchi said. She added that the suspect had exhibited violent behavior previously, including drawing knives, yet her mother endured the abuse for the sake of her children. Nania worked three jobs to support her family and dreamed of buying a home and living independently after 25 years of marriage.

"I want to say: Do not stay in an environment where there is a violent partner. Reach out to anyone possible and talk about it. Do not be afraid," Banchi urged.

Failed Appeals to Welfare Services

In the months leading up to the tragedy, the family repeatedly sought help from the Beersheba municipality's welfare department, asking for psychological treatment or a shelter for the father. In mid-September, Banchi messaged a social worker pleading for guidance, but received no effective intervention. Relatives noted that even when they reported urgent threats around Rosh Hashanah, welfare officials responded that action could only be taken if there was an immediate threat to life.

Gag Order and Family Outrage

The Beersheba Magistrates' Court issued a gag order on the suspect's name, drawing severe criticism from the victim's family. Banchi expressed deep frustration that her mother's name and tragedy were made public while the murder suspect enjoyed legal protection. Meanwhile, the municipality stated that no prior complaints of domestic abuse had been officially registered with the welfare department, adding that municipal support teams are currently assisting the remaining children, including a 16-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old boy who was present during the attack.
