Clashes erupted in Amsterdam's Dam Square during a pro-Israel rally after pro-Palestinian activists hung a giant Palestinian flag from the H&M building overlooking the square.
More than 2,000 people attended the event, titled "Standing with Israel." Despite heavy rain, participants waved blue-and-white flags, sang Hebrew songs, and watched a video message from the Israeli ambassador. Speakers included SGP leader Chris Stoffer, the Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands Binyamin Jacobs, and event organizer Jacques Brunt.
Security Measures and Protests
Meanwhile, Amsterdam authorities banned a counter-protest by pro-Palestinian activists at Dam Square over security concerns. The court rejected an appeal by the Palestinian Coalition, offering an alternative site 500 meters away at Oude Turfmarkt. Despite the ban, dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered near the square, spraying red slogans near the National Monument and chanting anti-Israel slogans.
"The decision to ban the counter-protest at Dam Square was made out of concern for public disorder if both groups protested in the same location," explained a spokesperson for Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.
Flag Incident and Arrests
At one point, activists unfurled a massive Palestinian flag from the third-floor balcony of the adjacent H&M store, dropping flyers onto the crowd below. Pro-Israel demonstrators rushed toward the flag, pulling it down and tearing it apart as the crowd cheered. Plainclothes police officers subsequently entered the building.
The incident triggered physical altercations between activists from both sides, prompting police intervention. Approximately 45 pro-Palestinian demonstrators were arrested for violating the protest ban and disrupting the event. Police later surrounded and evacuated a group of about 30 individuals near the National Monument after they shouted hostile slogans.
