Israeli Satirist's Pager Joke About Ireland Sparks Global Misinformation Storm
Israeli satirist Evgeny Zarovinsky caused a global uproar after a joke tweet about pagers in Ireland was mistaken for a real threat by international users and Al Jazeera.

Israeli satirist Evgeny Zarovinsky sparked an international social media storm when a joke about Israel's 3-0 defeat against Ireland went viral globally. Following the match, Zarovinsky posted on X: 'Come on, it's time to activate the pagers we scattered in Ireland,' referencing the sophisticated pager operation targeting Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon.
Within days, the satirical post was stripped of its context and shared by thousands of users worldwide, including accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. Some international users and prominent profiles framed the tweet as a genuine Israeli threat against Ireland, citing it as proof of aggressive state behavior.
One viral post falsely identified Zarovinsky as an 'official of the Israeli Foreign Ministry,' accumulating roughly 1.4 million views and nearly 100,000 likes. The Qatari network Al Jazeera also picked up the incident, running a dedicated report claiming an 'Israeli journalist' had threatened the Irish using pagers, which drew furious reactions across the Arab world.
In contrast, Yahoo News published a comprehensive fact-check debunking the viral claims. The outlet clarified that Zarovinsky holds no government position and is neither affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Ministry of Defense, but rather operates strictly as a private satirist.
