Israel Election Campaign: Yashar! Party Warns Smotrich Over AI Video
Israel's heated election campaign brings legal battles to courtrooms as Gadi Eisenkot's "Yashar!" party threatens legal action against Bezalel Smotrich over an AI-generated satirical video.
The intense election campaign currently underway is not only shaking up the political system and the Israeli public, but it is also placing an unprecedented burden on the shoulders of the court judges. As election day approaches, political battles are rapidly moving from the media and social networks to courtrooms, forcing judges to deal with an endless chain of legal disputes and urgent petitions.
The escalation in rhetoric, harsh exchanges, and tight competition for every vote are triggering a flood of petitions demanding immediate responses. Parties and politicians are flooding the judicial system with requests for injunctions against campaign broadcasts, petitions regarding election law violations, allegations of incitement, and internal disputes.
The Legal Clash Over AI Campaign Videos
An exceptional and new case that has now been revealed, illustrating the exacerbation of the legal struggle, is taking place between the "Yashar!" party, headed by Gadi Eisenkot, and Minister Bezalel Smotrich along with the "Religious Zionism" party. Through attorney Uri Haberman, Eisenkot's party sent an urgent warning letter to Smotrich regarding a propaganda video generated using artificial intelligence (AI) and published on his X account.
In the video in question—in which he did not participate at all—Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit, Judge Daphne Barak-Erez, and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara were depicted as if they were participating in a political protest against Smotrich, rioting and being dragged forcibly by police officers. The published video is satire as part of the launch of a joint program by the finance minister and the chairman of the Constitution and Law Committee, Simcha Rothman, for a new legal reform in Israel.
"Smotrich proves once again that for him there is no red line that he will not cross and no state institution that he will not trample for the sake of another vote at the ballot box."
Threats of Criminal Action
The letter claimed that the publication amounts to a severe criminal offense of contempt of court (carrying a sentence of up to three years in prison), while making unlawful and dangerous use of the likenesses and official status of senior judicial figures for election propaganda purposes.
The "Yashar!" party emphasized that this is not legitimate criticism, but dangerous incitement, incitement to violence, and the creation of a false reality attributing criminal behavior to senior rule-of-law officials. The letter made it clear to Smotrich that he must remove the video from all his advertising channels.
