Florida Firefighter Recognized as World's Shortest by Guinness World Records
Autumn Kelso, a 1.47-meter-tall firefighter from Florida, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's shortest female firefighter.
Height is just a number, at least when it comes to saving lives: Guinness World Records has officially announced that Autumn Kelso, a firefighter in the coastal town of St. Pete Beach, Florida, is the world's shortest female firefighter. According to Guinness measurements, her height stands at approximately 1.47 meters (though some reports estimate her height at 1.35 meters), as reported by the Liberty Times Net news website.
From Corporate Life to Burning Buildings
Despite her small stature, Kelso performs some of the most complex and dangerous missions in the field: she drives the fire engine, operates high-pressure water hoses, and enters burning buildings to locate and rescue trapped victims. Kelso has been serving as a full-fledged firefighter for five years, following a sharp turn in her life when she left a corporate career of about 20 years in favor of community service. According to UPI, she was simply looking for a more active and meaningful way to live, and found a warm and welcoming home at the local fire station.
The idea of applying to Guinness World Records started out as a joke among her station colleagues. However, one of the firefighters decided to thoroughly check if a suitable category existed, and upon discovering that Kelso met all the criteria, submitted the official documentation for the organization's verification.
Advantages of Stature in Narrow Spaces
The physical demands of the profession are grueling and demanding, but Kelso clarifies that her body structure actually has an advantage in certain cases, such as rescue operations in tight corridors. Kelso's low height allows her to squeeze and enter particularly narrow spaces, such as attics or small passages that other firefighters cannot reach.
"Do not be afraid to take risks and do not let other people set limits for you," Kelso emphasizes.
Because of her flexibility and ability to enter tight places, her crewmates even give her the nickname "spider monkey." Kelso recalls that about three years ago she was even trapped while trying to rescue a person, but was rescued with great resourcefulness and the assistance of her colleagues. The official recognition places Kelso alongside the record holder in the shortest male firefighter category, Vince Brasco, whose height is approximately 1.27 meters.
