The messaging app WhatsApp continues to add visual information layers to the main chat list, aiming to save users unnecessary actions. According to a report by the WABetaInfo website from overnight (between Sunday and Monday), the company has begun rolling out a new feature that displays a thumbnail preview of media files directly in the chats tab. The upgrade focuses on photos, videos, and stickers, allowing users to identify the content of the last message without opening the conversation.
An end to generic labels in the chat
Until now, when the last message sent in a chat was a media file, the chat list displayed only generic text such as "Photo" or "Video". This situation made it difficult for users receiving files from multiple contacts simultaneously to know what it was about without physically entering each chat. The new interface solves the problem by displaying a thumbnail image next to the familiar text, which maintains a compact size and does not take up additional space on the screen.
As mentioned, the new capability is not limited to photos, but is also fully applied to videos and stickers. Next to the video thumbnail, the identifying label is preserved to ensure the user immediately understands what type of file it is. The feature is especially useful when you want to locate a specific video recently received in a group or see which sticker was sent, without changing the message read status ("blue tick").
Continuing the transparency trend on the main screen
The current upgrade joins a series of improvements recently implemented in the chat list, such as displaying drafts of unsent messages directly on the main screen. Meta aims to turn the chat screen into an intuitive control panel that centralizes the most useful information at a glance. As the user is required to make fewer transitions between screens to perform basic actions, the user experience becomes more fluid and simpler.
The new feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta version for Android (version 2.26.32.11) on the Google Play Store. At this stage, it is available to some beta testers and is expected to expand to more users over the coming weeks before being released to the general public.
