US Midterms Show Resilience of Pro-Israel Democrats Amid Netanyahu Criticism
U.S. midterm elections reveal that pro-Israel centrist Democrats, including Josh Shapiro and Hakeem Jeffries, secured major victories. While maintaining strategic support for Israel, these leaders continue to voice sharp criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Despite the advances of progressive figures within the Democratic Party, the recent United States midterm elections also highlighted the enduring presence of pro-Israel centrist Democrats. Prominent lawmakers such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Representative Ritchie Torres secured decisive victories, maintaining their influence in Washington while distinguishing their steadfast support for Israel from their sharp criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Key Victories in Pennsylvania and New York
One of the most notable outcomes occurred in Pennsylvania, where Jewish Governor Josh Shapiro secured a second term after defeating Republican challenger Stacy Garrick. Widely viewed as a rising star within the party, Shapiro has consistently emphasized his commitment to Israel's security while openly criticizing Netanyahu's leadership, arguing that the current Israeli government has fostered international isolation.
In New York, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries won re-election in the state's 8th congressional district with approximately 79 percent of the vote. As Democrats eye control of the House, Jeffries stands poised to potentially become the chamber's first Black speaker. While critical of specific Israeli policies, Jeffries remains a vocal proponent of preserving the strategic alliance and security assistance between Washington and Jerusalem.
Influential Voices in Congress and the Senate
Representative Ritchie Torres of the Bronx also triumphed comfortably in his district, securing roughly 77 percent of the vote. Torres has established himself as one of Israel's most outspoken defenders in Congress, though he has similarly argued that Netanyahu's actions have strained relations with the Democratic Party. Similar dynamics were evident with the re-elections of Representative Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida, both of whom secured influential positions on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In the Senate, Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in U.S. history, continues to balance lifelong support for Israel with severe criticism of Netanyahu's governance. Alongside Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who won re-election despite Donald Trump carrying the state, these lawmakers demonstrate that mainstream Democrats maintain a complex approach: unwavering commitment to Israel's security coupled with strong opposition to its current executive leadership.
