A third aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, is making its way to the Middle East alongside an additional Marine division, providing US President Donald Trump with significantly greater military capabilities and a broader range of potential options regarding Iran. The deployment follows the breakdown of indirect negotiations mediated by Qatar, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the Iranian delegation to the UN to immediately leave US territory.
Stalled Negotiations and Diplomatic Tensions
The primary disputes center on the Iranian nuclear program, US sanctions, the blockade, and the Strait of Hormuz. Despite Qatari mediation efforts, including meetings in New York and Washington involving Qatari envoy Ali al-Thawadi, US officials, and Jared Kushner, talks hit a deadlock. Iranian demands for the lifting of the US naval blockade clashed with Washington's insistence on significant nuclear concessions.
The deal is stuck. The Iranians are demanding things that the US cannot accept, while the US believes it is winning and therefore there is no need for compromise, a source familiar with the talks said.

The arrival of the third carrier group reinforces assessments that renewed military conflict remains a distinct possibility. Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei claimed that Trump is unable to make a decision, while President Trump reiterated his stance to reporters regarding Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
