Ukraine's anti-corruption authorities have announced indictments against three senior security and police officials accused of protecting a major criminal syndicate involved in fraud, drug trafficking, and counterfeiting.

According to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), the suspects include a deputy department head within the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), a national police department head, and a deputy section chief. Investigators state that these officials, alongside individuals from the Prosecutor General's Office, accepted bribes to shield the criminal network, with some even assisting in planning assaults and abductions.

Massive Fraud Operations and Network Scale

The syndicate's activities reportedly encompassed dozens of call-center fraud hubs employing approximately 2,700 workers who targeted Ukrainian and foreign citizens. The network also engaged in cannabis-related sales as well as the mass production of counterfeit currency and cigarettes.

The criminal organization, believed to comprise at least 12 individuals, was initially exposed in September, though the ongoing probe has increasingly revealed deep collusion within law enforcement agencies. The scandal previously prompted the resignation of former Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko after authorities accused a subordinate of aiding the fraud operations, though Kravchenko himself has not faced criminal charges.

Institutional Friction and Official Responses

The high-profile case threatens to exacerbate long-standing tensions between NABU and the SBU, a powerful security agency answering directly to the president. Acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad announced that the agency dismissed two high-ranking officers linked to the investigation and pledged full cooperation, stating that the SBU expects a transparent and objective inquiry.

Police officials confirmed that the implicated officers have been suspended, while urging the public to avoid premature conclusions. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor General's Office expressed readiness to cooperate while maintaining that it had no prior knowledge of the illicit activities detailed by NABU investigators.
