Trump Calls to Bar Norwegian Immigrants Over Nobel Peace Prize Snub
US President Donald Trump called to ban Norwegian immigrants, citing the Nobel Committee's refusal to award him the Peace Prize. Norway's foreign minister responded that the committee operates independently.

US President Donald Trump sharply escalated his rhetoric against Norway during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, calling to block Norwegian immigrants from entering the United States. Speaking ahead of next week's midterms, Trump linked the demand to the Oslo-based Nobel Committee's decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to Reuters, Trump used harsh language during the rally, stating that Norway has become a subpar country and declaring that he does not want any immigrants from there because he was passed over for the prize. He contrasted this with recent unrest in France, which he blamed on immigration, adding that while he might welcome immigrants from certain nations, Norway is excluded.
Trump criticized the committee for awarding the prize to an unknown woman and questioned why he was overlooked. Earlier this month, he characterized the snub as an indelible stain on the Scandinavian nation. Norway, however, boasts one of the highest per capita incomes in the world according to International Monetary Fund data.
Responding to the remarks, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told national broadcaster NRK that Trump knows full well the Nobel Committee is independent. The ministry declined to provide further comment on the matter.
Contextually, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her democratic struggle, previously gave her gold medal to Trump during a January 15, 2026 White House meeting. Machado cited his commitment to freedom following the US operation that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that while medals can be gifted, the official title remains non-transferable.
