US President Donald Trump unveiled a new artificial intelligence-based portal designed to serve as a one-stop shop for government services, deepening his embrace of AI amid growing public skepticism regarding its economic and societal impacts. According to Bloomberg, Trump signed an executive order requiring all federal agencies to integrate their public-facing systems into the new platform, America.gov, aiming to streamline bureaucratic interactions.
Integrating Top Tech Leadership
The initiative is led by Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, whom Trump appointed as the government's chief designer. Gebbia's National Design Studio—operating under the same organizational framework as the now-dissolved Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by Elon Musk—focuses less on workforce reduction and more on making citizen interactions with the government seamless. Gebbia stated at the launch event that government websites have long been a nightmare for citizens navigating public services.
Features and Technological Stack
The new America.gov tool is designed to become the homepage of the federal government, allowing users to navigate information using natural language queries rather than searching across more than 29,000 separate government websites. Gebbia noted that the platform was developed using Google's Gemini and SpaceXAI's Grok. Trump criticized previous federal expenditures on subpar contractor websites, contrasting them with modern private-sector standards.
"For decades, Washington has paid massive sums of taxpayer money to federal contractors to build terrible websites that do not come close to the user experience you are used to in the private sector," said Trump.
Trump has made US leadership in artificial intelligence a cornerstone of his second term, repeatedly rejecting calls from researchers and industry figures to tighten restrictions on AI development. He warned that slowing down technological progress would allow China to gain an advantage in a race with profound economic and national security implications.
