A negative review or online shaming can easily become the ultimate nightmare for any business owner. However, for a local café in Kansas City, a harsh TikTok critique turned out to be one of the best marketing campaigns it could have ever received.

In late September, two young women posted a TikTok video documenting their visit to Oddly Correct, a popular coffee shop located in Kansas City, Missouri. Even before tasting the coffee, the pair expressed deep reservations about the establishment and the neighborhood where it is situated.

Unexpected Critiques and Viral Backlash

One of the visitors noted that the drive to the location felt somewhat intimidating and described the overall atmosphere inside the café as "demonic." Her friend pointed out the unusual artwork adorning the walls, and the video concluded with both stating they had no intention of ever returning.

"The initial reaction from our team was mostly amusement at the unusual criticism, but social media took the matter much further than we anticipated," shared Mike Schroeder, one of the owners of Oddly Correct.

Community Support and Record Crowds

Although the original video was eventually deleted, it had already circulated widely among café staff and local residents. Local content creators and residents quickly stepped in, publishing their own videos defending both the coffee shop and Troost Avenue.

The digital solidarity swiftly translated into physical foot traffic. Schroeder told local news station KCTV that the Monday following the viral video saw customer volume triple compared to a typical Monday, with long queues forming outside the entrance.

  • Staff adapted kitchen operations to manage the unexpected rush.

  • Inventory levels temporarily dipped due to soaring demand.

  • One of the original video's creators reached out to apologize personally.

Ultimately, a video meant to deter customers achieved the exact opposite effect, proving that authentic community backing can turn online negativity into an overwhelming triumph.
