Thailand Investigates Chabad Center in Phuket Amid Foreign Ownership Crackdown

Thai authorities have launched a formal investigation into the Chabad center in Patong, Phuket, as part of a broader crackdown on foreign business activities and land ownership. Phuket Governor Soontorn Rerksomboon ordered the probe to examine land titles, building permits, commercial licenses, and corporate shareholder structures.

The investigation aims to determine whether the facility maintains compliance with local laws and whether nominee shareholders are being utilized to conceal foreign ownership. Authorities are also investigating potential links between the Chabad center and a separate controversial project involving a planned Jewish cemetery in Thailand.

"The investigation is designed to ensure strict compliance with Thai legislation and does not target any specific nationality or religion," government officials emphasized, noting that preliminary findings will be published within seven days.

Scrutiny of Foreign Businesses and Local Concerns

The inquiry follows increasing public debate in Thailand regarding foreign business operations and real estate acquisitions. Out of more than 32,000 registered companies in Phuket, over 11,000 feature foreign shareholders. Recent audits have flagged thousands of entities for potential nominee arrangements, leading to legal proceedings against nearly 200 companies.

Local opposition groups in Phuket previously petitioned the governor regarding upcoming holiday events organized by the Chabad center, citing security concerns related to Middle Eastern conflicts. Meanwhile, parallel investigations into Jewish community projects in Koh Samui were recently closed after authorities found no legal violations.
