An 8-year-old girl with no underlying medical conditions is currently recovering in the pediatric intensive care unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem after suffering severe complications from influenza. She arrived at the hospital in critical condition with high fever and acute respiratory distress, requiring immediate sedation and mechanical ventilation. After approximately 24 hours of intensive care, her condition improved significantly, and she was successfully weaned off the ventilator. Medical staff confirmed that while the child was up to date on her routine childhood vaccinations, she had not received the seasonal flu shot.

Dr. Elihay Berliner, a senior physician in the pediatric emergency department at Shaare Zedek, noted that the patient arrived in a severe state requiring immediate medical intervention, drug therapy, and respiratory support before being transferred to the intensive care unit. Dr. Shani Cohen Elias, a senior resident who also treated the girl, emphasized that influenza is not merely an illness affecting adults. She warned that the virus can cause severe, immediate, long-term, and life-threatening complications in healthy children and infants, highlighting the critical importance of annual vaccination.

This severe case coincides with a broader surge in influenza hospitalizations among children and teenagers across Israel in recent weeks. Last week, a 17-year-old adolescent was hospitalized in critical condition at the pediatric intensive care unit in Assuta Ashdod University Hospital due to flu complications. After a week of being sedated and ventilated, she regained consciousness, was successfully weaned off life support, and began walking just days before her 18th birthday. According to data from the Israel Center for Disease Control at the Ministry of Health, over one hundred children have been hospitalized nationwide due to the virus during this period.
