Crypto Links Grow Between Russia and North Korea Amid New Trade Corridors
Russia and North Korea are seeing growing crypto connections alongside new physical infrastructure, with authorities tracking millions in cross-border digital asset flows despite lacking a formal financial bridge.

Alongside the new physical bridge between Russia and North Korea, another connection is developing between the two nations, this time through crypto. Unlike the newly opened road over the Tumen River, a formal financial connection between the countries does not yet exist in crypto. Russia launched a new framework on September 1 to regulate crypto activity, including the option to use digital currencies in cross-border payments. On the Korean side, authorities are preparing to tighten registration and supervision of digital asset activities.
Yet, the money is already moving. According to data presented, South Korean customs authorities detected over $246 million in USDT transactions intended for Russia that passed through local exchanges. At the same time, the country's largest crypto exchange blocked three platforms reportedly linked to the transfer of billions of dollars in USDT on the Tron network between entities in Iran and Russian payment companies.
These cases do not prove that an official crypto channel currently exists between Moscow and Pyongyang, but they indicate that digital money is already serving as an additional conduit for transferring value between financial networks that are harder to track using the traditional banking system.
Therefore, the question is not only what crosses the newly opened bridge at the border, but what will pass under the radar of the financial system. As Russia expands the possibility of using crypto in international trade, and as North Korea continues to contend with financial restrictions and sanctions, the potential development of new digital paths becomes an issue of keen interest to law enforcement authorities. The physical bridge is already open; the question is whether and when a crypto bridge will also be built between the two nations.
