US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Wednesday against a security escalation in the West Bank. Speaking at a press conference in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Rubio addressed the regional situation and sent a clear message to Jerusalem.
"The president has made it clear that we do not want to see additional flashpoints there," the Secretary of State declared. He listed existing challenges in the Middle East, including the implementation of agreements in Gaza, the fragile situation in Lebanon, the Houthi threat, and the ongoing confrontation with Iran.
Warning Against West Bank Escalation
Rubio stated that "the last thing this region needs is another flashpoint," sharpening his warning toward Israel by adding that "the last thing we think Israel needs is another flashpoint." He noted this firm stance has been communicated to all relevant parties.
When asked specifically about annexation and E1 construction, Rubio avoided taking a stance on a legislative initiative not yet on his desk, but reiterated the administration's opposition to any new crises.
Stance on Iran and Nuclear Program
Regarding Iran, Rubio clarified that President Donald Trump is open in principle to an agreement with the ayatollah regime, while keeping military options on the table.
"If there is an agreement with Iran, it will not be reached at a press conference," Rubio said, noting it requires hard work over time.
Rubio outlined the US red line, stressing that the main issue is that Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons. He also addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip, stating the required solution is a Gaza free from Hamas, managed by responsible Palestinian leadership.
