Robertson Opens Up on How Diogo Jota's Tragic Death Impacted Liverpool

Andy Robertson has revealed the profound impact that the tragic death of Diogo Jota had on the Liverpool squad last season, explaining how the grief in the dressing room made it difficult for big-money signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz to settle.

Jota and his brother André Silva were killed in a car accident in northern Spain in July 2025 as the 28-year-old Portuguese forward was traveling back to Liverpool for pre-season training. Robertson, a close friend, spoke on "The Overlap" podcast about the devastating period.

The Impact on New Signings

"If I speak about the new players, they arrived at a heartbroken club," Robertson said. "I felt so bad for them because they came in after being signed for huge amounts." He added that football became secondary as the team mourned the loss of a close friend.

"As a group, we didn't care about football. We had just lost one of our best friends in the dressing room," Robertson admitted.

Struggles on the Pitch

Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League without a trophy last season, with both Wirtz and Isak struggling to meet high expectations at Anfield.
