Jalen Duren remains the most prominent restricted free agent unsigned this summer. The center has been locked in a standstill with the Detroit Pistons since June, and with Media Day just a week away, the two sides do not appear close to an agreement on a new deal.
The Pistons recently increased their offer to $200 million over five years—up from the previous $180 to $190 million range—but even this failed to sway Duren. According to ESPN, the player feels the organization has not treated him with respect throughout the negotiations.
"Throughout this offseason, the Pistons' offer was in the neighborhood of 180 to 190 million dollars for five years—and to my understanding, it also included incentives such as weight-related clauses. That was also part of the issue," ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday.
Impact of the Walker Kessler Trade
Duren experienced a breakout season in 2025/26, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while earning third-team All-NBA honors. He played a central role in helping Detroit finish first in the Eastern Conference. However, after an stellar regular season, Duren struggled in the playoffs against Orlando and Cleveland, somewhat cooling the franchise's enthusiasm for a massive max deal.
The trade in which the Los Angeles Lakers sent two first-round draft picks and two pick swaps to the Utah Jazz for Walker Kessler, followed by a four-year, $130 million extension, further complicated negotiations.
Ongoing Impasse and Next Steps
On one hand, Duren can point to his statistics compared to Kessler's as proof that he deserves a significantly higher annual salary. On the other hand, the Lakers were the only team both capable of paying him what he wanted and interested in acquiring an expensive center this summer.
This has created a months-long impasse that continues to grow more complicated as members of the 2023 draft class begin signing their contract extensions, including Duren's teammate, Ausar Thompson.
