Reservists Pay Off Debts to Save Fellow Soldier and Wife from Insolvency
Israeli reservists stepped in to pay off 100,000 NIS in debts for a fellow soldier suffering from PTSD after October 7, allowing him and his family to resolve 1.8 million NIS in total debt.
In an extraordinary economic rehabilitation ruling at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate Court, army reservists stepped in to pay off debts for their fellow soldier and his wife. The reservist, who was called up on October 7 and engaged in handling fallen soldiers, was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and receives a stipend from the Ministry of Defense. Following the severe mental health crisis and the need for his wife to care for him alongside their special needs child, the couple slid into financial collapse and insolvency after previously managing a successful business.
During the hearing before Judge Karin Vishinsky, the soldier's comrades arrived in force. The representative of the unit stated that the comrades would cover the full 100,000 NIS required for creditors out of pure camaraderie. The couple's total debts amounted to approximately 1.8 million NIS, which will now be settled through this 100,000 NIS contribution and 6,000 NIS already held in the insolvency fund.
"Just as we trusted A. with our eyes closed on the battlefield and entrusted our lives to him, we have no doubt that with the necessary relief he will succeed in rebuilding his life," the unit members wrote to the insolvency trustee, Adv. Itay Gur.
Court Approval and Responses
Advocate Miki Weingarten, representing the insolvency commissioner, noted during the proceedings that this is an exceptional case where comrades step up. Judge Vishinsky approved the unusual arrangement, emphasizing that the circumstances warrant applying an exception to standard payment timelines.
Defense attorneys Shelly Nahum and Arthur Korol praised the court and the trustee for their sensitivity in handling the severe personal and financial toll paid by the reservist who fought for the country.
