The State Attorney's Office has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against the lenient sentence handed down to David Ben Gigi, who was convicted of armed robbery and stabbing a convenience store clerk in Ramat Gan.

Despite the District Court describing the assault as brutal and potentially lethal, Ben Gigi was sentenced to just nine months of community service. In contrast, his accomplice, who did not stab the clerk, received a 30-month prison sentence.

The incident occurred in April 2024 when four masked men armed with a knife and a club targeted a convenience store on Sokolov Street in Ramat Gan. As the clerk stepped outside to smoke, the perpetrators attacked him. Ben Gigi stabbed him twice in the back, while another assailant stabbed him in the chest. The clerk suffered stab wounds and a fractured rib, remaining hospitalized and unable to work for six months.

The Supreme Court will now determine whether to overturn the community service sentence in favor of actual imprisonment, balancing rehabilitation prospects against the severity of the violent crime and the need for deterrence.
