Rabid Dog Bites Two Residents in Samaria Settlement

A rabid dog bit two people on Friday in the Samaria settlement of Hermesh, raising concerns among health authorities. According to reports, the dog was initially struck by a vehicle, prompting several residents to approach and assist it. During the rescue attempt, the animal attacked and bit two individuals.

Approximately two hours later, the dog was found dead. Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed that the animal was infected with rabies. Authorities are currently working to determine how many other people may have come into contact with the animal or been exposed to the virus.

Investigation into Previous Incidents and Suspected Contacts

Investigators are examining whether this incident is linked to another event in the settlement days earlier, in which a stray dog entered a residential yard and attacked a local pet. Veterinary officials classify the Hermesh area as a high-risk zone for rabies.

"Such incidents illustrate how dangerous it is to approach stray animals or wildlife, even when they appear calm, friendly, or allow contact," warned Dr. Michael Ettinger, head of the Israel Veterinary Medical Association.

This event follows a recent outbreak in Karnei Shomron, where a rabid fox bit 14 people, including 11 soldiers and three civilians, leading to preventative treatments for 16 exposed individuals.

Prevention and Emergency Medical Guidelines

Health experts emphasize that rabies is fatal once clinical symptoms appear, but entirely preventable with prompt medical care. Residents are urged to ensure pet vaccinations are up to date and to avoid feeding or touching stray animals.
