Tensions in the Baltic Region
Despite his assurances regarding Western Europe, Putin stoked tensions with the Baltic states by mocking Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, who had declared that his country must be ready to repel any attack. Putin dismissed the remarks as provocation.
Meanwhile, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti briefly published and subsequently deleted an op-ed threatening a lightning war against Lithuania. The deleted article, written by freelance commentator Alexander Nosovich, followed legislative moves in Vilnius regarding nuclear policy. The piece was quickly removed, with the agency stating it did not reflect official state policy.
The Ukrainian Front and Retaliation
Turning to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Putin blamed a massive Ukrainian drone attack targeting Moscow during parliamentary elections for stalling peace prospects. He warned that Kiev would feel the full force of Russian retaliation.
