Almost two years after the murder: Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty
Mangione, who was accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson at the end of 2024, revealed in his confession to the court that he posed as an investor to confirm the location of the hotel where the investor conference was held, near which he committed the act.
28-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was accused of shooting to death UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson two years ago, pleaded guilty today (Friday) in a Manhattan court. Mangione pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking and to shooting Thompson outside an investor conference held at a hotel in Manhattan, and he faces potential life imprisonment.
"On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died," Mangione said. "When I did that, I understood that my actions could result in his death or bodily harm. I knew that what I was doing was illegal."
Mangione told the judge that his motive for killing Thompson was his experience with the healthcare system as a patient with a back injury. In a statement he read before the court, he said that "after years of suffering severe pain from a broken back and navigating the obstacles of the healthcare system," he learned that UnitedHealth would hold its annual investor conference in New York in December 2024 and that the company's executives would attend. In his confession to the court, Mangione revealed that he posed as a potential investor managing assets worth over $50 billion and sent an email to the insurance giant to confirm the location of the investor conference — with the goal of tracking Thompson.
It should be recalled that immediately after the murder, Mangione fled the scene and was caught only five days later at a McDonald's branch in Pennsylvania. Bloomberg reported that he enjoys the support of thousands of followers online, and dozens more who arrived at his court appearances, who share his anger toward the healthcare system in the USA.
