Porto Emerges as Top Winter Choice for Israeli Travelers Amid European Tensions
Israeli travelers are shifting winter vacation preferences from traditional European hubs to Porto, citing social tensions abroad. Porto sees a 25% surge in demand while Lisbon drops by 31%.

The winter tourism season is raising numerous questions for Israeli travelers as traditional Western European hotspots face complex social tensions, protests, and rising costs. Cities such as Paris, Barcelona, and various Italian locations are experiencing demonstrations that disrupt the desire for a tranquil urban getaway.
In response, the travel demand map is shifting rapidly. Many Israelis are turning to alternative destinations that offer a winter European experience without the crowds, protests, or inflated prices. Porto has emerged as one of the primary beneficiaries of this trend, establishing itself as a sought-after and cost-effective option for the early winter season.
Data from the tourism sector indicates that demand for flights and vacations to Porto has surged by 25% compared to the same period last year. Conversely, the capital, Lisbon, traditionally the main gateway for Israeli travelers to Portugal, experienced a 31% drop in demand. Although Lisbon still handles a volume of activity three times higher than Porto, the redirection of Israeli attention toward the northern city is unmistakable.
Asaf Greenberg, Marketing VP at lastminute, noted that Porto offers a wonderful combination of food, wine, and urban vacationing, while also serving as a gateway for trips across northern Portugal. For those seeking an end-of-year holiday outside the usual destinations, Porto provides a compelling alternative supported by growing interest from Israeli travelers.
As Portugal's second-largest city, Porto offers plenty of reasons to visit during the winter months, when historic port wine cellars and restaurants blend with illuminated streets and festive markets. Furthermore, average prices for direct round-trip flights to Porto, including baggage, stand at approximately $600 with El Al Israel Airlines in November and remain stable at around $610 in December.
In contrast, direct flights to Lisbon are notably more expensive in November, averaging about $750 with El Al Israel Airlines and climbing to approximately $810 with Arkia Israeli Airlines. By December, flight prices to Lisbon decrease and approach those of Porto, averaging around $630 with El Al Israel Airlines and remaining at $810 with Arkia Israeli Airlines.
